What runs in your browser
Lightweight utilities such as JSON formatting, Base64 encoding, URL encoding, small image previews, and most text or developer tools run entirely in your browser. Your file does not leave your device for these tools. These tools work without sending your file to our servers, without an account, and without a server step.
What may use server-assisted processing
Some conversion workflows -- for example large PDFs, video format changes, archive repackaging, and certain audio conversions -- use secure server-assisted processing so the conversion can finish reliably across browsers and devices. When a tool uses server-assisted processing, your file is transferred over HTTPS, the conversion runs in a temporary worker, and the resulting file is returned to you for download.
Temporary files and cleanup
For server-assisted conversions, the source file and the converted file are kept only long enough to complete the conversion and let you download the result. Processed files are cleaned up after completion. We do not retain a copy of your file beyond the conversion window, and we do not use uploaded files for training, advertising, or analytics.
Accounts and access
No sign-up is required to use any tool on the site. We do not require email, identity verification, or payment to convert or compress files at standard limits. If you encounter a tool that asks for any of those, treat it as a bug and let us know at editorial@file-converter-free.com.
File size and workflow limits
Different tools have different practical limits. Browser-side tools are limited by your device's memory; very large files may fail or run slowly on lower-end hardware. Server-assisted tools have per-file size limits documented on each tool page. We do not advertise unlimited capacity, and we do not throttle paid tiers because there are no paid tiers.
Sensitive files
For documents containing personal, medical, financial, legal, or otherwise sensitive information, prefer tools that explicitly run in your browser. When in doubt about whether a specific tool uses browser-side or server-assisted processing, check that tool's page or contact us before uploading. We do not provide formal compliance attestations such as HIPAA, SOC 2, or comparable frameworks, so the safer default is to keep highly sensitive files on your device.
Questions and contact
Editorial and product questions go to editorial@file-converter-free.com. We respond to questions about how a specific tool processes files, what data is retained, and how to verify the workflow before uploading anything.
Frequently asked questions
Do all tools run in my browser?
No. Lightweight tools run in your browser. Larger conversions (video, large PDF, certain audio and archive formats) use secure server-assisted processing. The tool's page tells you which path it uses.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no account, sign-up, or payment requirement to use any tool at standard limits.
Are there file size limits?
Yes. Browser-side tools are limited by your device's memory. Server-assisted tools have per-file size limits documented on each tool page.
Should I upload sensitive files?
For highly sensitive files, prefer browser-side tools or do not upload at all. We do not provide compliance attestations, so the safer default is to keep sensitive files on your device.
What happens after processing?
For server-assisted conversions, processed files are cleaned up after completion. We do not retain a copy beyond the conversion window and do not use files for training, advertising, or analytics.
