What is PPTX (Microsoft PowerPoint)?
PPTX is the standard file format for Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, introduced in 2007 as part of the Office Open XML standard. It replaced the older binary PPT format.
PPTX files store slides with text, images, animations, and multimedia in a ZIP-based XML format. The format is supported by most presentation software applications.
How PPTX Works
A PPTX file is an Open Packaging Conventions ZIP package in which each slide is a separate XML part, supported by parts for slide layouts, slide masters, and the presentation's overall structure.[1] Embedded media such as images, audio, and video are stored as discrete files inside the package and linked through relationship (.rels) entries rather than being inlined into the XML.[2] The inheritance chain from master to layout to slide lets a presentation apply consistent themes and placeholders across many slides.[1]
History and Standardization
PPTX is the presentation member of the Office Open XML family, published by Ecma International as ECMA-376 and adopted by ISO/IEC as ISO/IEC 29500.[3] Like the other OOXML formats, it is defined in both Transitional and Strict conformance variants, the former preserving compatibility with features carried over from the legacy binary PPT.[2] The open specification allows applications such as LibreOffice Impress and Google Slides to read and write PPTX in addition to PowerPoint.[4]
