About the platform, pricing, and who we are
File Converter Free is a web-based platform for converting, compressing, and editing files. It supports 215+ file formats across 8 converter categories (images, videos, audio, documents, ebooks, archives, fonts, presentations), 8 dedicated file compressors, and 75+ specialized online tools for image editing, PDF work, developer utilities, calculators, and text processing.
Most tools run entirely in your browser - your files never leave your device. For operations requiring server-side processing (video conversion with FFmpeg, document conversion with LibreOffice), files are processed in isolated containers and deleted immediately after.
Three key differences set us apart:
We use professional-grade open-source tools (FFmpeg, ImageMagick, LibreOffice, Calibre) for server-side processing, delivering quality that matches paid alternatives.
The platform handles files across three main areas:
215+ formats organized into 8 converter categories:
Each converter page lists all supported input and output formats for that category.
Yes, completely free. No hidden costs, no premium tiers, no subscription plans. All 215+ format conversions, all 8 compressors, and all 75+ tools are available at no charge. There are no paid features.
The platform is funded by minimal, non-intrusive advertising. The service will remain free - no bait-and-switch.
File Converter Free is built and maintained by Emir Baycan through Kalenux Bilisim Hizmetleri Ticaret Limited Sirketi, a registered technology company in Istanbul, Turkey. The company is D&B verified (DUNS: 751149242).
Emir is a full-stack developer who personally maintains every aspect of the service - backend infrastructure, conversion pipelines, frontend interfaces, and multilingual content. For support, contact dev.emirbaycan@gmail.com.
Browser-based tools (image editing, JSON formatting, calculators, text tools) are instant since they run on your device. Server-side conversions depend on file size and type: images typically take 2-5 seconds, audio 5-15 seconds, documents 3-10 seconds, and videos 10-60 seconds depending on length and resolution.
Server-side processing uses dedicated EU servers with FFmpeg, ImageMagick, and LibreOffice. Your device specs don't affect server conversion speed - a phone converts as fast as a desktop.
There are no file size limits. Browser-based tools process files locally on your device, and server-side converters also have no file size restrictions. Convert files of any size completely free.
These limits keep the service free and responsive. Most common use cases fall well within the limits.
How conversions work, supported formats, and tool details
The platform handles six main categories of file processing:
Most of our 75+ online tools run entirely in your web browser:
Browser tools include: image editor, color picker, JSON formatter, JWT decoder, Base64 encoder, hash generator, QR code generator, unit converter, and many more.
The platform works on any modern device with a web browser:
For large file uploads, a stable internet connection of 5+ Mbps is recommended.
File conversion takes four simple steps:
1. Choose your converter - Select from image, video, audio, document, ebook, archive, font, or presentation converter.
2. Upload your file - Drag and drop or click to browse. Multiple files supported for batch conversion.
3. Select output format - Pick from the supported output formats. Adjust quality settings if available.
4. Download the result - Conversion typically takes seconds. Download your converted file directly.
Yes, batch conversion is supported. Upload multiple files and convert them all to the same output format simultaneously. Files are processed in parallel on the server for faster results.
This is useful for standardizing image formats, converting photo collections, or processing document libraries.
Quality settings vary by file type: image compressors let you adjust quality percentage and dimensions, video compressors offer bitrate and resolution control, audio compressors provide bitrate selection (96-320kbps for MP3). Higher quality means larger file sizes.
For conversions, the platform uses optimal default settings for each format. The output matches the quality of the source file within the target format's capabilities.
No. DRM-protected files (purchased movies, music with copy protection, locked ebooks) cannot be converted. This is a legal restriction. Password-protected archives can be handled if you provide the password.
If a conversion fails, you will see a clear error message. The most common reasons are corrupted source files, unsupported format variants, or network interruptions during upload.
You will see an error message explaining the issue. Your original file is never modified or deleted. You can try again with different settings or a different output format at no cost.
Common causes: corrupted source file, unsupported format variant, or network interruption during upload. Try re-uploading or contact dev.emirbaycan@gmail.com if the issue persists.
Output formats, quality options, and download information
Output formats depend on the converter category you are using:
Each converter page shows the complete list of supported input and output formats.
The best format depends on your use case:
When in doubt, choose the most widely supported format for your target platform.
The platform covers 8 converter categories with 215+ total formats:
Consider three factors: compatibility (will the recipient's device/software support it?), quality (do you need lossless or is some compression acceptable?), and file size (do you have storage or bandwidth constraints?).
For sharing online, use widely supported formats: JPG/WebP for images, MP4 for video, MP3 for audio, PDF for documents. For archival or editing, use lossless formats: PNG for images, FLAC for audio, TIFF for print.
If you are unsure, stick with the most common format in each category (JPG, MP4, MP3, PDF). These work on virtually every device and platform.
Conversions work within the same media category: image to image, video to video, audio to audio, document to document. Some cross-category conversions are also supported, like extracting audio from video (MP4 to MP3) or converting images to PDF.
You cannot convert completely unrelated types (e.g., an image to an audio file). If a conversion is not possible, the output format simply will not appear as an option.
Some conversions may lose certain features. For example, converting a multi-layer PSD to JPG flattens all layers. Converting animated GIF to PNG keeps only the first frame.
Quality depends on the source file and target format. Lossless to lossless conversions (PNG to TIFF) preserve full quality. Lossy formats (JPG, MP3) involve some quality reduction, but we use optimal encoder settings to minimize visible or audible differences.
We use professional-grade tools: FFmpeg for video/audio, ImageMagick for images, LibreOffice for documents, Calibre for ebooks. These are the same tools used in professional production environments.
Tip: always start with the highest quality source file available. You cannot improve quality beyond the original through conversion.
For browser-based tools, the result is generated locally and you download it directly from your browser - no server involved. For server-side conversions, the file is processed and a download link is provided. Files are deleted from the server immediately after processing.
Download your converted files promptly. Since server-side files are deleted immediately after conversion is complete, download links are temporary. If you need the file again, simply convert it again - it is free.
For batch conversions, you can download files individually as they complete.
How to reach us and request features
No account needed. The platform works immediately:
This is intentional. No accounts means no personal data to protect, leak, or misuse.

How we handle your files and protect your data
Privacy is a core design principle, not an afterthought:
We do not know what files you convert, what formats you use, or how often you visit.
You have full control:
For privacy questions, contact dev.emirbaycan@gmail.com.
No. We do not store files beyond the brief moment of server-side conversion. We do not analyze file contents, mine data, share files with anyone, or use files for training AI or any other purpose.
For browser-based tools, your files never even reach our servers. For server-side tools, files exist on the server only during active processing and are deleted immediately upon completion.
We maintain basic server logs for error monitoring and nothing more. No conversion history, no file metadata, no usage patterns.
Our servers are located in EU data centers for GDPR compliance. All data processing occurs within the European Union. Server infrastructure runs Ubuntu with Docker containerization - each conversion job runs in its own isolated container that is destroyed after completion.
Infrastructure includes automated security patching, TLS 1.3 with forward secrecy, rate limiting, and security headers (CSP, X-Frame-Options). All storage is encrypted at rest.
EU-based servers mean the strongest privacy laws apply to your data, regardless of where you are located.
Yes. All connections use TLS 1.3 encryption with forward secrecy. Files uploaded for server-side conversion are encrypted in transit. Server storage uses encrypted NVMe SSDs. Each conversion job runs in an isolated Docker container with unique session handling.
For browser-based tools, encryption is not even needed since your files never leave your device. The data stays entirely within your browser's memory.
We implement security headers, rate limiting, and regular dependency audits to protect the platform itself.
Yes. We comply with GDPR requirements: data minimization (we collect almost nothing), purpose limitation (files processed only for conversion), storage limitation (immediate deletion), and transparency (clear privacy policy).
Since we do not require accounts and do not store personal data, most GDPR data subject rights are satisfied by default - there is no data to access, correct, or delete.
Our EU server locations ensure your data remains under EU jurisdiction and the strongest privacy protections available.
Troubleshooting, browser support, and requirements
Try these steps in order:
Include: what you were trying to do, the file type, your browser, and any error messages.
The platform works on all modern devices and browsers:
Server-side processing happens on our servers, so conversion quality is identical whether you use a phone or a workstation.
Common upload issues: File is corrupted, internet connection is unstable, or browser extensions are interfering. There are no file size limits, so size is not a factor.
Try: refreshing the page, checking file size, verifying the file opens normally on your device, trying a different browser, or temporarily disabling ad blockers.
If the problem persists, try incognito/private mode to rule out extension conflicts. Contact dev.emirbaycan@gmail.com with details.
No. File Converter Free works entirely in your web browser. No desktop software, browser plugins, or mobile apps required. Just open the website and start using it.
This means it works on any device with a browser, including locked-down work computers where you cannot install software. Always up to date, no manual updates needed.
The platform is available in 9 languages (English, Turkish, Arabic, German, Spanish, Hindi, Russian, Chinese, Indonesian) and accessible from anywhere.
Yes. The interface is fully responsive and optimized for touch. Works on iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets. You can upload files from your device's photo library or file system.
All features work identically on mobile and desktop. For large file uploads, WiFi is recommended to save mobile data.
Browser-based tools like the image editor, color picker, and text tools work particularly well on mobile since they process locally without needing to upload anything.
Any modern connection works. Browser-based tools need no internet after the page loads. For server-side conversions: 1 Mbps minimum, 5+ Mbps recommended, 10+ Mbps ideal for large files.
Internet speed only affects upload and download times - the actual conversion happens on our servers regardless of your connection speed.
For large files, a wired connection is faster than WiFi. Closing bandwidth-heavy applications during upload can also help.
