What is it?

PPT is the binary file format used by Microsoft PowerPoint from version 1.0 in 1987 through PowerPoint 2003. PPT files store presentation slides including text, images, shapes, animations, slide transitions, embedded media, and speaker notes in a proprietary binary structure. The format was the standard for business presentations for nearly two decades and is still widely encountered in corporate and institutional environments.

In 2007 Microsoft replaced PPT as the default format with PPTX, based on the Office Open XML standard. PPTX files are smaller, easier to edit programmatically, and support modern PowerPoint features. PPT files continue to be used for compatibility with older software and existing presentation libraries. All current versions of PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress, Google Slides, and Keynote can open PPT files.

Binary PPT files are often larger than equivalent PPTX files with ZIP-based XML compression.

Superseded Features

Modern PowerPoint features like SmartArt, improved animations, and 3D objects require PPTX format.

Macro Security Risk

PPT files can contain VBA macros that have been used in malware distribution.

When to Use It

Here are the most common situations where PPT is the right choice:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PPT and PPTX?

PPT is the binary format used before PowerPoint 2007. PPTX is the XML-based format introduced in 2007 that is smaller, more portable, and supports modern features. Both are fully supported by current PowerPoint versions.

Can LibreOffice Impress open PPT files?

Yes. LibreOffice Impress can open, edit, and save PPT files. However, some advanced animations or embedded media may not be perfectly preserved.

How do I convert PPT to PDF?

Use our free converter, or open the PPT in PowerPoint or LibreOffice and export it as a PDF file.

Can Google Slides open PPT files?

Yes. Upload the PPT to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides. Most formatting is preserved, though complex animations may not play identically.

Is PPT or PPTX better?

PPTX is the modern standard and is better in almost every way: smaller files, better feature support, and easier programmatic processing. Use PPTX unless a specific legacy compatibility requirement demands PPT.
